“I have Severe Bald Spots, and I Sleep in my Wig Every Night -- I’m Too Embarrassed for my New Husband to see my Unsightly Bald Spots…..” Alopecia is the general term for a variety of abnormal hair loss conditions. Read on to learn more about alopecia and to get your free consultation with Interlocks by Carolyn.
Traction alopecia is the most common balding disorder among young African American women and girls. Many suffered with this problem in early adolescence. Traction baldness occurs when the hair is pulled too tightly. The hair is literally pulled out of the follicle, taking with it the hair root and the bulb. Destroying the hair shaft may cause white bumps and pus (pustules) or scaling to occur around the affected area. If the tight pulling continues over a long period of time, permanent scarring or balding will develop. Traction alopecia is directly related to improper grooming techniques and hairstyling practices. The main culprit to this disorder are tight braids, ponytails, and the worst offenders: sponge rollers. These excessive hair loss problems should not be confused with normal hair shedding. It is estimated that the average life cycle of a hair strand is four to five years. A varying amount of hair will shed daily (50 to 100 strands) creating a continuum for new hair growth. This shedding process is altered by a variety of factors: gender, age, hair type, nutrition, heredity, physical health (hormonal changes, especially thyroid, postpartum shedding), emotional health, stress, drugs or chemical ingestion.
A common cause of alopecia is medication. As a courtesy, we have included a brief list for you. Cholesterol-lowering drug: Clofibrate (Atromis-S) and gemfibrozil (Lopid) High blood pressure drugs: Atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor), nadolol (Corgard), propranolol (Inderal) and timolol (Blocadren) Parkinson Medications: Levodopa (Dopar, Larodopa) Ulcer drugs: Cimetidine (Tagamet), ranitidine (Zantac) and famotidine (Pepcid) The next time your doctor prescribes any drug for you, ask if it will cause hair loss. In addition, you can Google (does “name of drug” cause hair loss). You will be amazed at all the information available to you. Check out www.drugs.com/pdr/, too.
